Royal Mail gets fast delivery flooring
02.09.09
Acrylicon Scotland has just completed a major refurbishment for Royal Mail. The Aberdeen Mail Centre, which handles all mail in and out of the North of Scotland, desperately needed new flooring. With 24hour lorry movements, there was no chance of using traditional resins.
Epoxy paint systems had previously been use as this was believed to be their only option. It never lasted more than 3 months before being impossible to clean and delaminating. Traffic demarcation lines and safety markings were being quickly worn off, leading to safety issues.
Knight Frank, Royal Mail’s property consultants, sought to find a more permanent solution. With Acrylicon Scotland being based in Aberdeen, a quick call followed by a technical presentation and reference visits were enough to convince them that Acrylicon had the solution.
Knight Frank specified Acrylicon’s Variant 2mm System. This mono-colour self levelling system has been used extensively in mail centres across Norway for over 20 years. Having a very high compressive strength of 98N/mm.sq. meant that the floor could take the incredible loads and traffic it would be subjected to day after day.
The whole 5600sq.ft. installation was carried out over a bank holiday weekend. Safety and traffic delineation was laid integral to the system – guaranteeing that they will not wear off, even with heavy traffic.
After installation, Royal Mail was delighted with their new floor. Kenny Cheyne, project manager, from Knight Frank reported “the floor looks great. It has already had a hammering as expected as this is a heavily trafficked area. There are rubber tyre marks form the fork lift which will clean off. Even though the floor has been abused in this way it still looks good and on close inspection you can see that the Acrylicon surface is still intact and the marking is in fact only on the surface.
Thanks again for all the work you have all put into this one, everybody including myself are very impressed with the efficiency with which the works were carried out and I look forward to working with you again”.
